Physical Exams Q & A

What happens during physical exams?

During physical exams at Primecare Family Practice, the team checks your body mass index (BMI), weight, blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs. The team reviews your medical history and the medications you may take. They also evaluate your eyes, throat, breathing, heartbeat, abdomen, and reflexes.

The team assesses heart and lung auscultation, hearing, and vision. They might complete urine tests, blood tests, screenings, or other diagnostic tests to detect and rule out potential problems.

Depending on the type of your physical exam, you might need to bring a few things with you to your visits, such as a picture ID, list of medications, contacts or glasses (if you wear them), medical certificate (if you have one), school form (if applicable), and a preferred form of payment.

What do physical exams include?

Physical exams at Primecare Family Practice include:

  • Sports physicals
  • Camp physicals
  • School physicals
  • Annual labs
  • Blood pressure
  • EKG
  • Skin exams
  • Injections

If you see a specialist for a medical condition, you might need clearance from them before passing a DOT exam.

What should I expect after physical exams?

After your appointment, Primecare Family Practice lets you know if you’re in good enough health to pass the exam. You might need clearance from a specialist stating you’re healthy enough to complete all job duties, school requirements, or sports requirements.

You may require vision correction changes or prescription medications as a condition of employment. Depending on the type of physical, the team fills out the appropriate paperwork needed by your school or employer and provides you with a copy of a medical certificate for your records.

How often should I schedule physical exams?

Primecare Family Practice conducts a full-body exam annually. For DOT physicals, a passing exam is usually valid for up to 24 months. Schedule an appointment with Primecare Family Practice to complete DOT exams as you require them.

Staff members offer other types of physicals too. Examples include sports, school, and camp physicals for you or your family.
